The municipality of Algodonales, as a member of the European Network of Municipalities Against Poison, held a workshop with the support of the Government of Andalucía and the Fundación Gypaetus.
In recent months, the municipality of Algodonales registered a high number of episodes of poisoning over pets and feral dogs in parks and streets. The increasing in the detection of poisoning cases, which threatens the local population and especially children, led the council to promote the organization of a working day on this topic. The request of the council was promptly answered by the field technician of the “Fundación Gypaetus”, who works in the area implementing the Life+ project Innovation Against Poison. This resulted in a call for the creation of a working group to seek for solutions. The group included participation of technicians from the Andalusian Scheme Against the Illegal Use of Poison, and also from the Environment Department of the Regional Government, the “Junta de Andalucía”.The event was attended by local authorities, police, veterinarians, civil guards and the “Fundación Gypaetus”. During the meeting attendants highlighted the need for legal tools which prevent animal abandonment, feeding them in public or possession of dangerous animals, among others. It was established a protocol detailing the roles of the stakeholders involved in the proper management of poisoning cases.

Given the delicate situation, the “Fundación Gypaetus” promotes collaboration of groups involved at the municipal level, but also inter-municipal realationships, trying to find common solutions to the territory on this problem which threatens our wildlife and the health of our neighbors. The “Fundación Gypaetus”, under the Life project "Innovative Actions Against Illegal Poisoning in Mediterranean Pilot Areas of the EU", promotes the union of municipalities located in experimental working areas through the European Network of Municipalities Against Poison. As Algodonales, municipalities joining the network receive free advising for conflict resolution.
