The Greek fight against illegal poisoned baits in Natura 2000 areas
Shocking results has given the visit of the European Canine Team from Andalusia to identify poison baits in Natura 2000 areas of  Antichasia Mountains – Meteora and Koziakas which was coordinated by ARCTUROS. ελληνικά

The team consisted of two drivers and 4 dogs, visited during 8-18 October 2013 villages and hunting areas and trying to clean out baits and poisons. Totally 14 poisoned animals and remains of baits were found!

Specifically, during the action of the first week, the European Canine Team found at the Municipalities of Kalambaka (Vlahava, Psiloma, Aura and Konisko) and Pyli (Kalogiroi, Saint Vissarion and Neraidochori) totally 11 dead animals and remains of 4 baits (7 dogs , 1 fox, 1 raven, 1 turtle and 1 hedgehog).The following days, the European Canine Team concentrated its efforts in cleaning from the poisons villages of the municipality of Kalambaka (Krya Brysi, Agiofyllo and Kastraki). Eventually were found another 3 dead animals (2 dogs, 1 fox) and poisoned food which had been used as bait. Samples from the remain baits and the dead animals collected by ARCTUROS team for further toxicological examinations.








At the beginning of the second week a special technical workshop about the European Canine Team took place with field demonstration in the village Vlahava of Municipality of Kalambaka for anyone who wanted to see the way in which the trainer work with the dogs and find the baits. After the demonstration an open talk and discussion was followed at the Information Center of Protected Area Chasia - Antichasia located in Kalambaka with the presence of vectors authorities of the region.

The overall event organized within the framework of the program LIFE+ Biodiversity 2009 entitled “Innovative actions against illegal poisoning in EU Mediterranean pilot areas” [LIFE09 NAT/ES/000533] was surveying of the Forest Services Trikala and Kalambaka and actively supported with daily participation by hunting clubs of Pyli and Kalambaka.
