Madrid holds a meeting of national experts in the fight against the illegal use of poisoned baits in the environment
The call for the meeting of the National Monitoring Committee was made by the Fundación Gypaetus in the frame of the Life project “Innovative actions against illegal poisoning in EU Mediterranean pilot areas”. The meeting was held in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment dependences, and gathered national experts who will develop a monitoring of the Life project in order to improve its performance. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment held in November, the 28th, the first meeting of the National Monitoring Committee for the Life project “Innovative actions against illegal poisoning in EU Mediterranean pilot areas”, which is coordinated by the Fundación Gypaetus.

The meeting gathered in Madrid representatives of national and regional administrations, environmental authorities, hunters, stockbreeders, scientists, veterinarians, specialized media and NGOs. The aim of the National Monitoring Committee is to contribute to the improvement of quality tools to end with illegal poisoning in Mediterranean basin, which is the main goal of the Life project. During the meeting were debated problems and strategies to reduce the main motivations for poisoning, as the design and formation of the “European Networks of Municipalities, Hunters and Stockbreeders against Poison”, the elaboration of technical guides about measures to reduce predation, and the management of abandoned dogs and cats in urban areas.

Among the conclusions of the meeting it could be highlighted the need of disseminating the work of the European Canine Team, a specialized dogs patrol to detect poisoned baits, as an efficient tool to prosecute crimes, as well as the relevance of international character of the Life project to involve the European authorities in the fight against poison.

The National Monitoring Committee has its counterparts in two other partner countries, Portugal and Greece, and will meet yearly, till the end of the Life project in 2015.
